Remote Instruction Team: New, comprehensive UI resource for online teaching

We're writing to tell you about a new initiative from Distance and Online Education (DOE) and the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology (OTLT): the Remote Instruction Team.

The Remote Instruction Team is made up of experts in all aspects of online instruction, and they are ready now to offer the support you need as you develop and teach your online courses.

The team offers a range of support options, including one-on-one consultations and online daily drop-in sessions. Also, their website has many helpful resources. See the message below for details.

We encourage you to take advantage of this outstanding resource offered by our UI partners.

The Remote Instruction Team

The Remote Instruction Team will provide support staff, training opportunities, and other resources needed to help UI instructors better plan and adapt to differing modes of teaching and learning, including best practices for course structure, effective communication, and course facilitation.  The team has expertise in all facets of face-to-face and remote course delivery, and they are prepared to begin working with faculty immediately.

Information about these efforts, as well as links to request support, are consolidated on the From Pandemic to Planned web page, which is linked on the Keep Teaching at Iowa website. Faculty visiting this site have several options for support:

  • Click on the Request Help button on the Keep Teaching at Iowa website to select a preferred mode of help.

  • Fill in the Request a Consultation form, which identifies the specific assistance they might need (e.g., course restructuring, managing discussions online, creating meaningful assessments).  The form is immediately triaged by staff members of the Remote Instruction Team who, in collaboration with the faculty member, will develop a plan for the most effective delivery of the course in the fall.

  • Independently review the information on the From Pandemic to Planned web page to identify possible ideas and solutions.

  • Attend one or more of the online daily drop-in sessions to get one-on-one support for quick questions or for a dry-run on a specific technology or online teaching strategy.
