CLAS Weekly Reopening Update: June 26

Here is the CLAS Weekly Reopening Update for June 26:

Academic Delivery

The CLAS Fall 2020 Academic Delivery Committee is finalizing CLAS-specific guidelines for delivering the academic experience.

Since the announcement of the University of Iowa guidelines for the Fall 2020 semester, the leaders of the committee (Associate Deans Helena Dettmer and Christine Getz, Professor Cornelia Lang) have been meeting with CLAS DEOs, Directors of Graduate Studies, and Directors of Undergraduate Studies to answer questions, provide information, and gather feedback that will help to form the basis of the CLAS-specific guidelines. Please feel free to contact the committee leads with questions and ideas.

The committee's guidelines will be reviewed by the CLAS Senior Leadership Team and Executive Committee, as well as the Office of the Provost, before being disseminated to faculty and staff.

The finalized CLAS academic delivery guidelines will align with CLAS strategic planning regarding student success and the sustained integrity of the college's academic mission. These remain the essential considerations, regardless of the environment in which the college must operate, and regardless of the modalities of teaching employed. Additionally, the CLAS guidelines will build upon the policies outlined by central University of Iowa administration.

Return to Work

At this time, there is no set date for when employees working remotely should return to campus. Employees working remotely should continue to do so until further notice and should not return to campus until CLAS leadership instructs DEOs and supervisors otherwise.

Some exceptions are in place, per the research ramp-up process that has been occurring in stages, for individuals whose research or artistic production requires the use of specific campus facilities. Only those spaces required for the research are allowed to have sustained physical presence. Faculty may quickly retrieve items from offices, but may not stay in them for prolonged periods.

CLAS buildings where such activity has been authorized on a restricted basis are Biology Building, Biology Building East, Chemistry Building, Halsey Hall, Field House, Psychological and Brain Sciences Building, Seashore Hall, Spence Labs, Trowbridge Hall, Van Allen Hall, and Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center.

Further guidance on CLAS return-to-work guidelines are forthcoming. The guidelines will prioritize minimizing exposure to, and the spread of, COVID-19 while aligning with our core academic mission.
